True Worship Plain & Simple!!! (Part 1)
John 4 22-24
“Ye worship ye know not what: we know what we worship: for salvation is of the Jews. But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him. God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.”
Today, there is a struggle amid Christians of all races, creeds and ethnic backgrounds when it comes to the subject of worship. Many people believe that worship is something that must be manufactured like one would see on an assembly line. Many churches today have led people to believe that they can only worship God corporately in church. This is not true! Others believe that worship only happens when music is playing loudly with flashing lights and screaming crowds. Whether or not this can be a type of worship, I cannot say. According to the bible, we don’t see these type of elements as a condition for worship. This week we will talk about worship, plain and simple. Join us as we break down true worship!
What is worship? Webster dictionary defines worship as:
- reverence offered a divine being or supernatural power; also : an act of expressing such reverence
- a form of religious practice with its creed and ritual
- extravagant respect or admiration for or devotion to an object of esteem e.i. worship of the dollar
So we see that worship involves respect, reverence and admiration. This week we will define worship plain and simple.
In our text today we see that Jesus spoke about God, The Father! Much like we need to speak about Jesus, the Savior. Now when we speak about this subject of witnessing there are three areas that we must focus upon.
A. Witness The Power Of God – I have learned that people will worship whatever they perceive with divine power. People in the most remote countries believe that a form of deity can save them and their families from destruction. Once this power is witnessed, people will begin to see value in this deity. The reason why most people will not witness for God is because they don’t really see the power of God! Their perception of “their” god is a man still nailed to a cross that is dead and powerless. My God is not on a cross He is alive and sitting on a throne next to God The Father! Hayman!!!!
B. Witness The Provision Of God – Most people have a hard time talking about God enthusiastically because they don’t really see Him working huge miracles in their lives like He did in another person’s life. I have heard Christians say “Why won’t God give me what He gave this person?” You know, because of this perceived injustice, they give God the cold shoulder and refuse to communicate to Him, for Him and about Him. This is simply being a spiritual cry baby and throwing a spiritual tantrum because I didn’t get what I wanted! Grow up spiritually, and learn that God has given you life, health, clean air to breathe and everything that you have now. What else does God have to give you? By the way; the way that you deal with a cry baby is to deny them what they asked for and punish their behavior and begin to remediate them in acceptable behavior. What if God is waiting for you to get your act together before He will bless you?
C. Witness The Protection Of God – Because Christians refuse to submit to the power of God and forfeit the provision of God, they automatically risk not being protected by God! Look, I’m not saying that every case where bad things happen are because God removed His protective hand. All I am saying is that when we refuse to see God as powerful, He somehow makes it so that we do. When we believe that God should do something for us when we haven’t acted right, why should He reward bad behavior? By the way, protection isn’t just limited to physical protection but can also be spiritual, mental and emotional protection. We will talk more about that later this week but protection is very important but ONLY after we know the protector!
D. Witness The Propitiation Of God – People that claim the name or title of Christian that have not experienced the propitiation of sins from God will never talk about God. Why should they talk about a person of whom they do not know. In our text, we see that Jesus met with a woman and she was told that she must worship in Spirit and in Truth. In order for Worship to be biblical and genuine it must possess three things:
1. An Open & Willing Heart
2. The Presence Of The Holy Spirit
3. The Truth Of The Knowledge Of The Scriptures
Worship cannot and will not exist without these three elements. Music, bands, singing, shouting and even bible strong preaching are all good things but all is vain unless the Spirit of The Holy One comes down. How’s your worship? Is it true and honest or is it theatrical and humanistic? Only Jesus can change your heart and allow you to see true worship. In tomorrow’s devotional, we will learn about bringing your best to the Master. Join us again as we address real life issues with biblical answers on Worship With Willie.
