Struggling With Sir Worry & Lady Doubt (Part 2)
“But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.”
Mr. Depression and Mrs. Misery have just had children and we see that their birth certificate reads “Sir Worry & Lady Doubt”. They appear to be normal children until they reach their adolescence. Then we begin to see their personalities come out and identify them with these characteristics. This week we will learn about the differences between Sir Worry and Lady Doubt and how they can effect us in our lives by:
When Sir Worry & Lady Doubt were growing up, there was hardly anything that made their parents Mr. Depression & Mrs. Misery believe that their children had adopted some of their traits. However, in the life of a believer, when one lives with constant misery, then we see it will not be long before depression visits. When these two meet then the result of their combined effects will be Worry & Doubt! Join us this week as we discuss SIR Worry & LADY Doubt.
II. The On & On Switch
When Sir Worry and Lady Doubt deal with people having issues they begin to flip the switch of worry and doubt in their minds. When this switch is flipped, it instantly blinds our faith with a dark cloud of fear and uncertainty. Here is what happens:
You are at work and the boss tells you that he needs to see you in his office at the end of the day. Let the attacks begin:
Sir Worry flips his worry switch and instantly your mind begins to think, “Why would the boss call me into his office at the end of the day?” Sir Worry begins to flash past mistakes to your mind and leads you to the assumption “You are getting into trouble that will cost you your job. What can we come up with to say to the boss so that we can save face and try to keep our job?” Now you are trying to figure out why you are going to lose your job and then Sir Worry hits you with the list of your obligations: Bills, Groceries, Car Payments and Insurance. You then begin to contemplate how you will meet your obligations. You then begin trying to do things in your power to calm your mind but Sir Worry has painted such a convincing picture that you cannot stop observing it. Now you are in full blown worry and nothing will release you from this trap until you “hear” that you will be okay and things will be resolved.
Lady Doubt flips her doubt switch and instantly your mind begins to think, “Why would the boss can me into his office at the end of the day?” Lady Doubt begins to take over from the point where her big brother Sir Worry left off. He has made you worry about your immediate present but Lady Doubt is logical and makes you consider your future in the light of this scenario. She whispers, “You know, your boss is going to fire you and you will have to tell people that you were fired. This will make them not want to hire you because of being fired from this job. You will never get another job as good as this one. I doubt if anyone will ever hire you because of this incident.” She will make you consider changing your current situation and act irrational because of the picture that Sir Worry has painted. Sir Worry is a great picture painter and he does an excellent job at pulling emotion from people. Lady Doubt is a great motivational speaker because she gets 99% of the people she speaks to moving in the direction she points them. Full blown doubt will make you motivated to take defensive action when no offensive aggression is suspected.
The bible tells us in
“Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on. Is not the life more than meat, and the body than raiment? Behold the fowls of the air: for they sow not, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feedeth them. Are ye not much better than they? Which of you by taking thought can add one cubit unto his stature? And why take ye thought for raiment? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they toil not, neither do they spin: And yet I say unto you, That even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. Wherefore, if God so clothe the grass of the field, which to day is, and to morrow is cast into the oven, shall he not much more clothe you, O ye of little faith? Therefore take no thought, saying, What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed? (For after all these things do the Gentiles seek:) for your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things. But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you. Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof.”
Did you read those verses? Did you notice that Jesus said “Behold the fowls of the air: for they sow not, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns;“. Do you we fully understand this verse? Jesus is saying that the millions of birds don’t have to plant seeds, nor do they have to harvest fruit in order to provide for their families. Jesus said “yet your heavenly Father feedeth them” and then Jesus asked the question “Are ye not much better than they?” Jesus is asking this question but He is really saying “These millions of insignificant birds are taken care of by God Almighty. Surely that same God that provides for these birds will go out of His way to take care of His crowning achievement. You!”
When Worry and Doubt come into your mind, you have a choice whether or not you will allow it decay your faith or to grow and test your faith. Today as you walk with The Lord, remember that the Worry and Doubt switch will be flipped in your life but you don’t have to let the light of adversity blind your ambition and overcast your faith. In tomorrow’s devotional we will talk about the next step in this process. Join us again as we address real life issues with biblical answers on Worship With Willie.
