Struggling With Sir Worry & Lady Doubt (Part 1)
“But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.”
Mr. Depression and Mrs. Misery have just had children and we see that their birth certificate reads “Sir Worry & Lady Doubt”. They appear to be normal children until they reach their adolescence. Then we begin to see their personalities come out and identify them with these characteristics. This week we will learn about the differences between Sir Worry and Lady Doubt and how they can effect us in our lives by:
When Sir Worry & Lady Doubt were growing up, there was hardly anything that made their parents Mr. Depression & Mrs. Misery believe that their children had adopted some of their traits. However, in the life of a believer, when one lives with constant misery, then we see it will not be long before depression visits. When these two meet then the result of their combined effects will be Worry & Doubt! Join us this week as we discuss SIR Worry & LADY Doubt.
I. The Waiting & Depending Game
According to our acronyms above, we see that the first thing that happens in the realms of worry and doubt and waiting and dependance. Most Christians will testify that these are the most difficult things to do in your walk with God! This first step of waiting and depending is the building blocks of faith. Notice what our scripture says today:
“But without faith it is impossible to please him:”
There are a few things from this verse that we see in respect to Sir Worry & Lady Doubt:
- Waiting = Time
When we wait, we are voluntarily or involuntarily surrendering our limited time for God’s unlimited time frame. We all fight with time and struggle with managing time effectively. Sir Worry spends great deals of time telling all those who will listen that “Since God hasn’t answered your prayers, in the time that He should have answered them, He doesn’t care about your unique situation and doesn’t love you like He loves someone else.” Time is most important to Sir Worry because he knows it is something that you can’t control but complain the most about not having a lot of at your disposal. When we wait upon God patiently, we realize that time is of no concern to Him because we realize that he owns it all. Additionally, we will realize that He knows that our time is short and precious to us and will reward us in His time which will benefit us. How do you fair when it comes to time management?
2. Depending = Believing In The Unseen
When we depend on something or someone, at that time, we put our trust and weight into the situation. It’s like sitting into a chair; no one sits in a chair with half of their weight. We begin the encounter by sizing up the chair to see if it will actually hold our weight and then we trust it and surrender our will into it. That’s what God wants from us! He wants us to
- Matthew 11:29 “Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.”
- Jeremiah 33:3 “Call unto me, and I will answer thee, and shew thee great and mighty things, which thou knowest not.”
- Hebrews 2:13 “And again, I will put my trust in him. And again, Behold I and the children which God hath given me.”
Did you know that Faith, Trust & Obedience to and in God are all a personal choice? Dependance is NOT a personal choice, it is the by-product of the aforementioned behaviors. You cannot choose to depend on God, you either do or you don’t but as the bible says, “Without FAITH, it is impossible to please God!” All the bible men and women that have done mighty and amazing things, all pleased God by their faith. How much more do we need to seek to please God in this manner.
Sir Worry would like for you to complain about waiting while God says in Isaiah 40:31 “But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.” The bible says this in the book of Psalms 37:9 “For evildoers shall be cut off: but those that wait upon the Lord, they shall inherit the earth.” There are blessings for waiting on God but Sir Worry likes to makes you believe that there is or has been a curse applied.
Lady Doubt would like to make you believe that depending on something or someone that may or may not be there is illogical but God’s Word tells us in Hebrews 11:1 “Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.” The bible also warns us that “A wicked and adulterous generation seeketh after a sign; and there shall no sign be given unto it, but the sign of the prophet Jonas. And he left them, and departed.” According to this verse, when we consistently ask for a sign as a means of faith, then we not only displease God but we could, by our lack of faith, keep Him away from us.
This today as you go about your day, remember that Sir Worry & Lady Doubt seek to play the game of refusing to wait and depend upon God. These two will let you think that you have won the game but in reality, once you pick up the first piece from Sir Worry & Lady Doubt you forfeit your winnings that Jesus already paid for with His blood. In tomorrow’s devotional, we will talk about the next piece that Sir Worry & Lady Doubt throws out to believers.
