The Day Of Freedom (Part 1)

The Day Of Freedom (Part 1)

‭‭1 Peter‬ ‭2:15-18‬ ‭KJV‬‬

“For so is the will of God, that with well doing ye may put to silence the ignorance of foolish men: As free, and not using your liberty for a cloak of maliciousness, but as the servants of God. Honour all men. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honour the king. Servants, be subject to your masters with all fear; not only to the good and gentle, but also to the froward.”

To many people the 4th of July is just another holiday in which we can take time off of work and enjoy fireworks. However, to many more Americans, this days holds a special purpose. In our text we see an admonishion of not using our liberty as a cloak of maliciousness or wrong doing. What is true freedom?

1. Knowing Who & What Gave You Freedom.

2. Knowing That Freedom Is A Choice

Knowing Who & What Gave You Freedom

In America, we know that our freedom is granted to us by the founding documents which are:

  • The US Constitution
  • The Declaration Of Independence
  • The Bill Of Rights
  • The Articles Of Freedom

These documents are what provides our freedom but the who is a different story! Who gives us freedom?

It is the Soldier, not the minister

Who has given us freedom of religion.

It is the Soldier, not the reporter

Who has given us freedom of the press.

It is the Soldier, not the poet

Who has given us freedom of speech.

It is the Soldier, not the campus organizer

Who has given us freedom to protest.

It is the Soldier, not the lawyer

Who has given us the right to a fair trial.

It is the Soldier, not the politician

Who has given us the right to vote.

It is the Soldier who salutes the flag,

Who serves beneath the flag,

And whose coffin is draped by the flag,

Who allows the protester to burn the flag.

This is the only one who gives true freedom! Many politicians promise freedom but few have ever been in a position to say that “I have been a member of the Armed Forces”. This is not an indictment against them but how can one write laws that give freedom unless they were the ones that fought for it!

Likewise, one will never experience true freedom unless they realize that they are in bondage! The bible tells us that we are in bondage.

Romans 5:12

“Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned:”

‭This tells us that we are all under the yoke of a sinful ruler by birth. Much like people that are born into slavery have no control over their own freedom. They were born into slavery and needed one from the outside that was free to come into them to rescue them. This is why the bible tells us in:

Romans 5:8

“But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.”

We read this as one man having compassion on us to come to us and free us by giving himself for us so that we could be free. Jesus came to us so that we could be free through him into eternal life.

Biblically, we only receive eternal through Jesus Christ’s sacrificial death and resurrection. Have you trusted in the one that has provided freedom for you by dying for you? If not, then you will be a slave to sin and be bound in a prison of unfulfilling self pleasure and immorality. To gain this free gift of salvation/freedom, ask God to give you His freedom and He promises that He will. In tomorrow’s devotional we will see how chooses freedom and what barriers can stand before them. Join us again as we address real life issues with biblical answers on Worship With Willie.
