What Is Christian Music? Part 9

What Is Christian Music? Part 9

Colossians 3:16

“Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.”

Many people will say that Christian Music is one or more of the following responses:

These responses are the answers from an article on got questions.org

– The song lyrics must reflect biblical truth.
– The song lyrics must directly praise God/Jesus.
– The song must mention God/Jesus.
– The song must be written for Christians and not as an evangelical tool.
– The lyrics must directly address God, not other people.
– The song must be completely new, not a cover of a secular song.
– The song is designed to be played in church, not outside of church.
– The melody must be paramount, and the rhythm subdued.
– The song must be written and performed by mature Christians only.
– The men & women who sing the song must live what it is they sing about.

This week we will address each of these individual ideas.

Disclaimer: The purpose of this devotional is not to tell you what type of music to listen to nor is it to tell you that your selections or choices are wrong. It is designed to give you a measuring stick to measure your loyalty and obedience to God’s Word. The choice is up to you. Your walk with the Lord will only be as strong as the music you allow to penetrate the channels of your mind. Trash in, trash out; God in, God will come out.

Some of the information that I will share today WILL shock you about today’s “Christian” artists and even some self professed artist that were once Christian but now sing worldly music. Let me start out by saying that I am NOT perfect and am not bringing an indictment against these people personally. I am NOT judge, jury and executioner! I am only presenting this for informational purposes only. No person, living or dead, will be personally slandered by me, my ministry or any of it’s affiliates. Let’s get started.

What is a Christian artist? A Christian artist is an artist that performs Christian media, material or music that uplifts the spirits of other Christians as they live the Christian life in private that validates their public stance.

There are literally thousands of very popular and not so popular Christian artist out there that self-brand as holy servants of God. Let’s look at a few Christian artists that live what they believe and portray. Here are my personal favorites:

The Collingsworth Family

This family performs together and shares the word of The Lord together. Their music is only a part of their ministry to others. You cal almost feel God pouring off of their music and off of their ministry as they perform for The Master.

Brian Free & Assurance

“It’s more than just singing songs, it’s about leading others to Jesus Christ!” A direct quote from group leader & ordained minister Brian Free. He testifies that as a tenor in the group “Gold City” he sang about the Lord but did not know the Lord. “I was lost but felt very comfortable singing the old hymns and being in churches.” Many people can sing about God but not even know Him personally. How sad would it be to devote a life to serving God in many wonderful works but not even know Him personally.

The High Road

Of course I am a little biased since this group happens to be in my local church and be friends of mine. Jordan is one of the most sincere Christians I know. Many people are not aware of the struggle that they are in daily but God still uses this families talents. Cayla Finnell is the most Godly woman I know. When she sings it’s like the voice of an angel. Justin, is a very friendly man that treats everyone he encounters with kindness and the joy of the Lord can be seen upon his face as he speaks. This family has been a blessing to me personally and I am glad that Worship With Willie has the ability to promote them as much as possible.

So those are a few groups that I enjoy which have outstanding testimonies for the Lord. They live what they sing about! Now here are a few artist that you probably didn’t know with Christian beginning:

Katy Perry

Having renounced her own faith, as a child, Katy indicates that “I don’t believe in an old man on a throne in heaven.” Searching google for her name you will find all kinds of photographs from g rated to R rated. With a gallery of photographs like that, would you identify this behavior with something that honors Christ. That’s a decision that you have to make for yourself.

The Late (Whitney Houston)

Such a tragedy! She actually started out in church singing in her church choir. As she became increasingly popular she moved into the mainstream and into popularity. She was a great actor and musician but as we see the lures of this world were very strong.

Yes! She actually began in church singing in the choir and even became a member of a group called Destiny’s Child. This group of women originally began singing gospel songs and Christian music until they split for Beyonce’ to go solo. There is a lot of questionable behavior and ethical questions in her spiritual life.

So what does this tell us? A few things:

  1. The devil is real.
  2. He is still deceiving people to denounce their profession of faith for momentary riches.
  3. The world will never be happy with you until sell out and adopt their philosophy.

We will cover more artist that actually claim the name of Christian artist that live any thing but a Christian life. Our series “Christian Artist Believe It, Or Not” will be a series that you won’t want to miss. Join us again as we address real life issues with biblical answers on Worship With Willie.
