The 5 Things That I Learned From The Ancient Egyptians (Part 3)
The Egyptians were a people that were accustomed to seeing the latest and greatest technology of the day. They were also witness to the most current magic, incantations, spells and illusions as well. So not too much, in these areas, surprised the ancient Egyptians. In fact, in my study of the ancient Egyptians, I discovered that entertainment and amusement was a very big industry for this people. I has been recorded that the Ancient Egyptian Pharaohs would only endure the same routine or show 2 times before bashing the entertainers out of his court. You didn’t want to be that person. So knowing this information, here is what I learned from them.
III. THEY COULDN’T TELL THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A SHOW AND PLAY OVER THE SHOWING OF GOD’S POWER
“And the Lord spake unto Moses and unto Aaron, saying, When Pharaoh shall speak unto you, saying, Shew a miracle for you:then thou shalt say unto Aaron, Take thy rod, and cast it before Pharaoh, and it shall become a serpent.
And Moses and Aaron went in unto Pharaoh, and they did so as the Lord had commanded:and Aaron cast down his rod before Pharaoh, and before his servants, and it became a serpent. Then Pharaoh also called the wise men and the sorcerers:now the magicians of Egypt, they also did in like manner with their enchantments. For they cast down every man his rod, and they became serpents: but Aaron’s rod swallowed up their rods. And he hardened Pharaoh’s heart, that he hearkened not unto them; as the Lord had said. And the Lord said unto Moses, Pharaoh’s heart is hardened, he refuseth to let the people go.”
A. They Saw The Power Of God As A Cheap Trick
In our text we see that Moses and Aaron brought the Power of God into the presence of the King of Egypt as a sign that God was God. However, the Pharaoh did not heed to the display of God’s power because he knew that he had seen the magicians and sorcerers do the same thing.
In our lives spiritually, people usually won’t respect God’s power nor His man being used to display that power because they think that have seen it before. They may see the TV preachers act a certain way or their local preachers act or behave in a specific way. The people of this world will interpret this as the movement of the power of God. The question in that situation is “Why would God move in a situation when His Word tells us that He would stay away”? When it comes to your life and testimony, does the world see it as a cheap trick or moment of amusement or is it something supernatural that can’t be explained by nothing else but The Hand Of God?
B. They Tried To Replicate The Power Of God
I had never noticed this before until recently but we see that the bible tells us in Exodus 7:11 “Then Pharaoh also called the wise men and the sorcerers: now the magicians of Egypt, they also did in like manner with their enchantments.” What I get from that verse is that the Pharaoh called the brightest minds in his court to replicate a spiritual movement in a physical way. Also, these people were the same ones that The Pharaoh called when he had a spiritual condition. Additionally, this verse is addressed as Exodus 7:11, which makes me think about the 7eleven convenience stores around the world. The 7eleven stores are conveniently located to provide you the things that you require without too much of an investment. They are also owned by a single owner and franchised out to those in specific areas in order to make a profit.
The Egyptian court of Pharaoh were conveniently located so when the Pharaoh had a need they addressed it in order to make a profit. These people were owned by the master salesman “satan”. He wants to keep them and us behind a vale of religion so that we don’t enter into a relationship with God. So they came out and cast their rods out and they became serpents as well. They had successfully replicated the power of God but we saw later that it was a cheap imitation. How about you? Do you try to replicate God’s power in order to make people think that you know Him when you really don’t. Lost people can seem like they have the power of God upon their lives but it will all be swallowed up when they come into contact with the man of God. If a true man of God came into your presence, would your testimony be swallowed up as a fake or would it bear witness with his that you are the children of God?
C. Their Hearts Were Hardened And They Became Bored With God Just Like Their Entertainment
This is the primary reason why most contemporary churches thrive for periods of time but usually see rollercoaster ride attendance. People want to be entertained at church and leave feeling good about themselves. When the Word of God is watered down so that they don’t have to bear witness to the sharp sword of God’s Word they can feel comfortable in His presence. The Egyptians were probably under conviction for a moment but saw their friends, the elegance of the palace and remembered it was only snakes, they went back to their hardened heart.
Most people will never really understand the salvation of the gospel because they look at it as “An Old Book” and you as a “Disciplined Person”. They harden their hearts because they “The Lost World” sees this as self will and self desire to change. So their mindset is “Don’t force your beliefs upon me, people believe other things besides that”. They don’t and can’t see God working because all they see are the vessels that God uses to work. Much like the people of Egypt only saw the snakes, the people of our world will only see _______. (You fill in the blank).
Every time that we loose our temper, loose our cool and loose our testimony by acting out, this will make the people to whom which God has sent us not believe in God. They will think, “If your God is so powerful, then why can’t He help you”? If you aren’t wise enough to listen to your own God, whom you are trying to convince me to heed, them why should I respect Him? This world is seeking the real deal and that is only found in the Lord Jesus Christ. This is why the ancient Egyptians were destined to suffer a cruel and Godless fate. How about you? How is your testimony before God? Lord help us to remain sensitive to His calling and election. In tomorrow’s devotional we will discuss more lessons from the Ancient Egyptians.
