How Can I Reach My City With The Gospel? (Part 2)

Acts 1:8

But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.

Reaching people in today’s modern world seems like an enormous task. People today have more information at their fingertips, through technology, now more than ever. The people can communicate with their families that are hundreds and even thousands of miles away with the simple push of a button. They are reminded that human engineering and ingenuity has prevailed. The people take pride in the accomplishments of there own hands. However, there is one thing missing: Peace.

Humanity scurries around in human learning and reasoning much like a rabbit in the darkness. They think that they know what’s best but they know not that they are borrowing time from The Master. They avoid the Light of the Gospel message because of it’s conviction and condemnation. They reject the gospel just like babies reject sour milk. So, how do we reach people that are so fixed on rejecting what’s good for them? How Can I reach My City With The Gospel?

Divide And Conquer

One of the first things that you should consider, if you’re serious about reaching your city, is to make a plan to reach the city. You will never have success reaching the people like you desire to reach unless you make a plan to logically do so.

There are things that you can do to facilitate you Dividing & Conquering:

Break Things Down Into Managable Sections “...and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth…”

i. When the disciples were told to preach the gospel all over the world but notice, according to our text, it all started with a small portion then grew. God is a God of order and increase as we go forward for Him. It all begins with being a witness. Unless you’re a witness in your own house then how can God trust you to go out in the city and reach others that you don’t know. If you can’t even be trusted to be a witness inside of your own doors then why should God trust you to leave the house?

ii. Next Jesus told them to be a witness in Jerusalem which is a type of neighborhood wher you live. The whole idea of reaching your neighborhood is overwhelming but think about it like this. Start with your street and map it out from stop sign to stop sign and each side of the road as an A and B section. This will get your street reached and your immediate neighbors a personal witness.

iii. The next section is Judaea. A good way to reach those in the next neighborhood is to use the same technique for the streets that touch yours within that original Jerusalem area. Since it will be a larger area, I would allocate or plan on spending the same amout of time as you did in your neighborhood for each location as before.

iv. The next location is Sameria. This would mean that you reach out beyond your local neighborhood and touch the neighborhoods around you. This will take some logistical planning. This will require some travel to this area and plans for bathroom breaks not to mention food. This is where I woud divide your zip code in the same manner until you have a plan to reach your neighborhood with the gospel. Don’t do it all at once! I would take my time and maybe do a city block a day or make your goal 50 houses a session.

v. Lastly, unto the uttermost parts of the world. Now that you completed a successful gospel outreach campaign I would begin to use this blueprint to seek out other zip codes or communities in your city until you have given every household a personal witness.

This will take time and it will not be easy because the devil will use people to try to discourage you but if you stick to the layout you will see God’s hand moving.

Bearing The Rejection Of Others

This is tough, as a human, to handle rejection when you care so deeply about something. When you’re being rejected, it’s not about you it’s about the Lord being rejected. A few ways to handle rejection:

A. Have A Rejection Verse In Your Mind – Psalms 126:6 “He that goeth forth and weepeth, bearing precious seed, shall doubtless come again with rejoicing, bringing his sheaves with him.” When they reject the message, they aren’t rejecting you, they are rejecting Jesus. Remember that you are called to give the message not make friends. This verse will help keep you from becoming emotionally defeated.

B. Have A Clear Vision Of Your Mission – Mark 16:15 “And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.” Knowing that you have more ground to cover will allow you to go forward. For example if I know that I have 30 houses to reach a day and I start out with a rejection, then I only have 29 to go. The pain of the race isn’t so bad when you can see the finishline.

C. Have A Plan To Celebrate The Receptive Hearts – Luke 15:10 Likewise, I say unto you, there is joy in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner that repenteth.” Draw off of the energy that God allows you to have when you reach one person with the gospel. Another way to do this as well is to go out with an accountability partner. This person will give you silent encouragement and verbal encouragement when you need it and you likewise for them as well. Maybe stop and pray and praise God for giving you an open heart to speak the gospel into.

Today we saw that reaching the city with the gospel is a seriously time consuming endeavor. It will involve planning, prayer and preparation of your part but the results are the Lord’s part. However, the better we plan the sweeter the rewards are to us when God moves. I hope that this has encouraged you to seek to reach your local neighborhood with the gospel of Jesus Christ.
