How To Get The Victory (Part 4)
“No man can serve two masters:for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon. Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on. Is not the life more than meat, and the body than raiment? Behold the fowls of the air:for they sow not, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feedeth them. Are ye not much better than they? Which of you by taking thought can add one cubit unto his stature? And why take ye thought for raiment? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they toil not, neither do they spin: And yet I say unto you, That even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. Wherefore, if God so clothe the grass of the field, which to day is, and to morrow is cast into the oven, shall he not much more clothe you, O ye of little faith? Therefore take no thought, saying, What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed? (For after all these things do the Gentiles seek:) for your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things. But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you. Take therefore no thought for the morrow:for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof.“
I know that this seems like a lot of scripture to digest but I believe that God has something special for us today in these verses on how to get the Victory for today. How many times have you done all that you could do spiritually but it seems like you find yourself getting impatient or ever frustrated because the “Process” isn’t going according to your plan? Or better yet. That same “Process” isn’t moving as quickly as you anticipated. We so desire that help from The Lord but it doesn’t manifest itself like we would envision. This causes us to adopt a sense of concern, this concern turns into worry, this worry turns into panic and this panic turns into desperation if not corrected. Oftentimes, we will know the truth, we will know what to do but our emotions hold us back. Here are a few things that will cause a violent emotional response.
A. Spending Time With Negative People – all too often we will hang around people that either speak or have a negative spirit. Have you been around someone with a negative spirit? That negative spirit will can control our mind and motives but most certainly impact our mood or emotions. A negative spirit will travel faster than a speeding bullet and do more damage.
B. Consuming Disturbing News – This world is nothing but a cesspool of negative, disturbing and oppressive tidings. The news of this world usually begins with the most negative and appalling stories right off of the bat. Consuming these things before you have the opportunity to prepare yourself will provide the ideal conditions for meditating on the things that weaken instead of strengthen.
C. Social Media Stalking – Most of the people that follow social media will probably covet something that someone else has which they have exaggerated or lied about having. Isn’t it interesting that people on social media attempt to impress the world by fabricating their wealth in order to impress people that usually will spend three seconds caring then forget. However, our culture has built a society of people that believe that a lack of material things means poverty.
D. Being Disorganized – Studies show that people that lack organizational skills at work, home or at play show that their stress level is higher than those that are organized. The study shows that their inability to see the completion of their work and a lack of progress leads them to want to give up constantly. This carries over into other areas as well.
E. Too Much Screen Time Before Bed – All too often we are so connected to our electronics to include: smartphones, tablets, computers, televisions, radios and games that we loose sleep. The brain actually produces a hormone that makes us fall asleep, this is called melatonin. It is produced by the Pineal Gland which can only be activated in very dark environments. When our electronic devices are in our faces the gland does not operate at it’s maximum efficiency thus causing us to forfeit sleep. Which can effect our moods.
F. You’re A Spiritual Damn -You’re driving to work and that idiot driver cuts you off. But instead of losing your cool, you remain calm and let it go. You get to the office and you’re immediately bombarded by that one coworker that lacks the social skills to know when other people are no longer interested in what he’s saying. And instead of snapping at him and telling him you don’t really care what he has to say, you sit quietly until he’s exhausted his self.
Then lunch rolls around, and another coworker is offering up freshly baked brownies. You know you shouldn’t because you’re watching what you eat. But before you know it, you’ve got chocolate on your fingers and a satisfied sweet tooth. But once your sugar high wears off, you’re beating yourself up for giving in so easily.
The phenomena is referred to as ego depletion, and it basically means that the more temptation you resist, the harder it becomes to resist the next temptation.
G. You’re Comparing Yourself To Psd. Files -For the non-technical readers, a psd. file is a photoshop file. And unfortunately, modern media is over saturated with photos that have been doctored to remove blemishes and project perfection. Men are made to look like descendants of Hercules. They’re given chiseled jaw lines, perfect hair, and a six pack that would put these guys to shame. Women look like they’re fresh off the runway, with lean mid sections, long legs, and the perfect bust. And the problem here is that, whether you realize it or not, your attitude about yourself is affected by the images you’re constantly bombarded by. And what’s even worse, is that they affect your mood in a negative way.
Your emotions, if left unchecked, will hold you back. It is like a race car that has the gas pedal floored but the parking brake is still engaged. You will try to go full speed ahead but something internal is holding you in the place from where you want to depart. Today we will talk about that internal mechanism that holds you at the starting line. Your mood!
CHANGING YOUR MOOD
Disclaimer: These steps mentioned for Getting The Victory are not guaranteed to work unless you are dedicated, determined and disciplined to work through adversity. If you plan to do it until they work, you must not accept failure nor allow yourself to surrender until you have achieved the victory.
Let me ask these questions and I want you all to answer honestly. Do you frequently become angry at injustices? Do you find yourself wanting to give up when things don’t go your way? Do you struggle with keeping your focus at times? Don’t feel bad, if you’re like most people, you can see yourself in this situation. Better yet, is this your cycle?
A. You get your batteries charged at church to live for God.
B. You get to a tough situation and feel confident about how you will handle it
C. The situation changes into something that you haven’t plan to handle and your mood changes
D. You become irritated, upset, frustrated or lose your boldness because this area is unfamiliar.
E. You try to research about how you will handle it in the future but you become overwhelmed because too many answers bombard you.
F. You feel that you’re not good enough to handle any situation and give up
G. You avoid dealing with any situation and lose your boldness
H. You become encouraged by a song, person or situation and seek to serve again.
I. You feel bad for thinking that you couldn’t be used in the first place.
Is this your thinking cycle? I admit that I have thought this way in the past and struggle with this cycle in the present as well. We don’t have to be emotionally oppressed, we can get the victory. How? Let’s look at the bible. Our help will come from God’s Word and not the power of human understanding or even positive thinking. The only thing that positive thinking will do for an emotionally oppressed person is make them happy that they have a problem. It won’t help them to cope with the issue.
I. You Have To Be Proactive “No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon. Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on. Is not the life more than meat, and the body than raiment?“
If you are going to get the victory over an oppressive mood you have to take positive steps in order to make it happen. The first step is to realize that satan wants to overwhelm your mind, oppress your motives and your mood. He wants to cloud your mind so that you are confused. He wants to control your motives so that you willingly want to do his will instead of God’s will. Then he wants to oppress your mood. If he can control your mood then he has won the fight. Ask yourself this question: Do I feel like serving God when I have a bad mood? Honestly, we can but we won’t feel like it! So how do I be proactive?
Set The Tone For The Day – Right when you get out of bed, you have complete control of your emotional state. Make the first thing that you hear, say and see about The Lord and how good he is to you this day. Jesus said, “Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life“. This could be because of the tone which would be set very early. Usually, the first thing on our minds will remain with us throughout the day. Have you ever heard a song very early when you were getting ready for the day and then it remains with you all day? Why is that? Because our minds are hungry for information, mental breakfast. The question is What are you feeding your mind? Do you give it junk that will not satisfy it or will you give it the things of The Lord which satisfies. You have to be proactive when setting the tone for the day.
II. You Have To Be Protective “Behold the fowls of the air:for they sow not, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feedeth them. (For after all these things do the Gentiles seek:) for your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things.“
Have you ever been driving your car and thought in your mind, “If the other driver cuts me off, I will do this and this”? You know we plan for the worst case situations physically but fail to do so spiritually. We need to plan and have a spiritual run away ramp when the mood oppressors come.
Notice this image! The idea is when you notice your mood beginning to drop beyond what you know that it should be, then your job is to seek the run away truck ramp.
The run away truck ramp indicated here is clearly marked by a sign. This is a ramp set apart from the regular traffic. It is for trucks that have been loaded very heavy whose ability to stop the load from overwhelming it and causing it to run into other on the road causing damage and injury. These ramps are usually positioned where the normal road drops way below grade. The heavy ladened truck’s brakes can sometimes give out and not be able to control the load. The run away truck ramp takes the vehicle in the opposite direction. It is designed to take the truck up a steep hill instead of down a wild uncontrolled slope. This ramp allows the truck to escape going up instead of crash going down. In our lives spiritually, we need to escape going up to God instead of letting the heaviness of our emotions crash us into things, people and places. When you feel your emotions taking you rapidly down hill beyond what you can safely control, you need to immediately take this ramp and go up to God in prayer.
III. You Have To Be Ready To Praise “But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you. Take therefore no thought for the morrow:for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof.“
Have you ever been to a football game or a sporting event and the home team is down by a large margin and the will of the team is defeated then you see the band play the fight song and the team comes back and defeats the visitor? Why is this? The band isn’t on the field with the team. It’s because the band played the school’s fight song. It reminds the team who they are and why they are on the field. The fight song lets the crowd and the team know that they aren’t alone and they still have some fight in them. This music gives them motivation and injects their mood and emotions with the will to fight.
We too need a spiritual fight song! I have a spiritual fight song that I listen to in times where I’m low and this song reminds me to praise God for what He has done in the past. It reminds me that He is with me in the present. It assures me that He will remain with me in the future. Do you have a spiritual fight song? I encourage you to find a spiritual song that reminds you of God’s goodness and start the day off with your fight song. Play it throughout the day and end your day with this fight song. Pretty soon, you will find yourself singing this fight song when the music isn’t playing. This will encourage you when the tough times come. Just like David encouraged himself in the Lord, this is a way to encourage yourself in the Lord as well.
It is difficult to want to win a fight when we are laying on the floor in pain and licking our wounds. However, when the enemy has given you the best he has and you’re still standing, it is encouraging because you know that the best is yet to come because God has given you the victory and it has been assured.
