How To Get The Victory (Part 2)
I Corinthians 10:13
“There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.”
When you are going through a difficult time in your personal lives, remember that you are in complete control of your actions. You can not control the initial action that has caused you to stress but you do have a choice whether you allow yourself to become overwhelmed. I have noticed that most humans, especially Christians, have this action response:
I. Stressful Event Happens
II. Christian Immediately Becomes Overwhelmed
III. Christian Immediately Begins To Figure It Out
IV. Christian Becomes Extremely Stressed Because They Realize That They Can’t Solve It
V. Christian Stresses More About The Issue And Starts To Panic
VI. Christian Finally, In Desperation, Seeks God
VII. Christian Begin To Panic More Because God Isn’t Moving Fast Enough
VIII. Christian Becomes Impatient With God’s Timing & Tries To Solve It Again
VIV. Christian Gives Up, Out Of Stress & Exhaustion, God Delivers On Time
X. Christian Feels Bad Because The Realize That They Didn’t Put God First
Is this your cycle of coping with stressful situations? Can you see parts of this cycle in your own life? I know that I can. Unfortunately, all too often, we are in so much of a rush to get things done that we “Leave God In The Dust” when He should be driving. In order for us to begin to get the victory we need to: Change Our Mindset.
CHANGING YOUR MINDSET
How do we change our mindset from the previously mentioned cycle? There are a few things that you can do to help you Get The Victory.
Disclaimer: These steps mentioned for Getting The Victory are not guaranteed to work unless you are dedicated, determined and disciplined to work through adversity. If you plan to do it until they work, you must not accept failure nor allow yourself to surrender until you have achieved the victory.
A. Know That God Has A Way Designed For Your Situation
Our text speaks about God making a way to escape that you may be able to bear it. This means that each person has their own temptation or stressor that they struggle with daily. Yours could be doubt, trust, lying, overindulgence or an immoral heart. We must realize that God has already been there. However, I don’t want to come across as a person that invalidates pain, persecution and peril in the lives of others. Sometimes, God wants to develop our character. He allows pain, suffering and oppression in order to lead us to a deeper trust in Him. God uses these feelings to draw us closer to Him. Most people think of trusting God, in this way, as blind faith to a real life issues that they can’t see a way out.
Im not asking or telling you to just remain stoic and say, “God will work it out” when there is no real plan for it to work. It’s like telling a Prisoner Of War (POW) that the Calvary is coming but not telling him when and from which direction. God has a plan for your situation and He will arrive in a way that you will know that it is Him. I believe that the first thing that you should do is take a deep breath and say “Lord, I can’t handle this situation on my own, please give me a clear direction to the path that you want me to take.” The reason why I said this is because God may want you to remain in your current place. Notice the bible says “…but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able;..”, this means that God may want you to stay in a situation until He sees fit to remove you. Why? Because, someone in there may need to witness a light in this dark world. Also, God knows your limit that you will cease to be effective for Him as well. That’s why the bible says “but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it”. He knows when you’ve had enough and He will intervene before you fall apart and give up. That’s why He has made a perfect door for you to open that leads the way out. You have to seek it and ask Him which direction that you need in order to go through it and have victory.
B. Know That Stress Hides The Goodness Of God
How many times have we read Jesus say “Take no thought for tomorrow” or not to worry about food or clothing? Many times in the gospels we hear Him saying that simple phrase. Why? Could it be that once we start to think about the things of this world that we forget that God is good and what He has done. You see, when we forget what God has done we probably won’t consider what He will and can do. Consider this portion of scripture:
“Hear ye therefore the parable of the sower. When any one heareth the word of the kingdom, and understandeth it not, then cometh the wicked one, and catcheth away that which was sown in his heart. This is he which received seed by the way side. But he that received the seed into stony places, the same is he that heareth the word, and anon with joy receiveth it; Yet hath he not root in himself, but dureth for a while:for when tribulation or persecution ariseth because of the word, by and by he is offended. He also that received seed among the thorns is he that heareth the word; and the care of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches, choke the word, and he becometh unfruitful. But he that received seed into the good ground is he that heareth the word, and understandeth it; which also beareth fruit, and bringeth forth, some an hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty.”
We see that Jesus spoke about the person with the cares of this world having the word of God “CHOKED” causing them to be unfruitful. Jesus knows that stress causes us to feel choked away from the word of God. Many people report that they get so stressed out that they “Can not breathe”. The reason why, is because the stress of the world is choking the word out of them. How do I prevent and stop this from happening again? Keep your heart close to God so that it is good ground. I have never heard a Christian close to God say that they feel choked. They are on good ground and no matter what, they thrive because their roots are not dug into this world but in the fertile ground of Jesus Christ.
C. Know That You Own The Rights To Your Mind
All too often I hear Christians remark “I just can’t stop my mind from going there” or “I just couldn’t help myself”. I ask them “What are the names of your kids?” and without hesitation they reply with the names of their children and usually talk about the details of them as they say their names. I ask them to not think about their kids for 60 seconds and they say “I can’t NOT think about my kids”. Why is that? Because their children are important to them. Also, since their children were recently on their minds, it would be hard for them to forget them. We can see that if we have something on our minds and something else comes up, the original thing that was there probably won’t disappear.
When we fill our minds with Jesus Christ and the goodness of God, it will be very difficult to want to focus on anything else. Just like that lady and her children couldn’t put off thinking about her kids, so must we with God. All too often we take no thought about the things of God because we live busy lives. I understand that everyone leads busy and productive lives and they don’t have hours to devote to reading entire chapters of the bible. I get that, but even a time to stop and think about God will give you a little boost to continue with Him. No one owns the rights to your mind except you. In like manner, if your mind is filled with junk and not God it really is no one else’s fault but _____ you fill in the blank. You have to take ownership of your mind and not let outside influences control your mind. Whatever controls your mind, will also control your will and emotions. Don’t believe me? Read this verse of scripture:
“And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.
Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.”
Did you see that part about your emotions?
True – How does it make you feel when people lie to you? Is that an emotional response?
Honest – How do dishonest people make you feel? Is that an emotional response?
Just – How does it make you feel when people cheat you? Is that an emotional response?
Pure – How do sour spirited people make you feel? Is that an emotional response?
Lovely – How does it make you feel when people are hateful? Is that an emotional response?
Good Report – We all know how the negative news is on the TV, Radio and the newspaper. How does this make you feel? Is that an emotional response?
Do you see how our emotions can be controlled by outside influences? Without putting God in our minds and heart we will be overwhelmed by this world’s oppressive mood. That’s why God’s word says “And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.” Peace is not an emotion! It’s a state! I wished that my country The United States had a state of peace. I would love to move there. We only get peace through Jesus Christ.
What about you? Do you need to change your thinking? Is your mind filled with the horrible news of this world or does it contain the words of Jesus Christ? Only you have control of your mind. Don’t give the keys to your Godly mind to the wickedness of this world. They don’t understand you but you can relate to them. You’re an ambassador of Jesus Christ. They are seeking real peace which you have. Share it with them. Today, focus on godly things and see how your day turns out. In tomorrow’s devotional we will cover another lesson in how to get the victory. Join us again as we address real life issues with biblical answers on Worship With Willie.
